After many years of involvement, the disillusion imperceptibly crept over me. Slowly I went from full-on Church leadership to disengaged boredom, sitting at the back of church on Sundays, licking my wounds, frustrated and confused.
But this is not a book about spiritual depression, burnout, or a journey away from the evangelical church.
Rather, it tells the story of my introduction to an ancient wise-man from a different culture. Engaging with the writings of this disciple not only sparked my rational interest, giving me hope, but led to the beginnings of a far deeper encounter with the God of Heaven. Unpacking two works by Gregory of Nyssa, The Life of Moses and The Beatitudes, helped me to begin my God-ordained, unending Climb on the Ladder of Ascent.
‘You cannot want what you do not know’ writes Gregory. Packed with examples of his wisdom along with many of my personal experiences, this book is written in simple language for a modern audience. My aim is to shed light into what seems unknown to many and so to help your ascent into the ‘Dazzling Darkness’ of the eternal, Divine presence.
